For Adults

The Shalom Institute

The Shalom Institute’s activities centre on an exploration and celebration of our Jewish heritage by developing a learning community. Mandelbaum House

University of Sydney

The University of Sydney offers a wide range in subjects at undergraduate and graduate levels. Courses include Jewish Civilisation, Thought and Culture, Classical Hebrew & Jewish Texts, Biblical Studies, Yiddish and Modern Middle East (including Israel) Studies.

University of New South Wales

The University of New South Wales offers a program in Jewish Studies concentrating on the modern period. Courses include Jews in Modern Society, the Holocaust and Arab-Israeli Conflict.  www.arts.unsw.edu.au/jewishstudies/

 

Sydney Jewish Museum

The Sydney Jewish Museum is a museum of Australian Jewish History and the Holocaust. It offers a wide range of educational materials and programs from resource packs and lesson plans to student visits and teacher professional development (accredited by the NSW Institute of Teachers). www.sydneyjewishmuseum.com.au

School students

Board of Jewish Education

BJE provides Jewish education to Jewish students in state and non-Jewish private schools in NSW. It also offers school and teacher groups study programs including visits to synagogues, the Sydney Jewish Museum and other sites of Jewish interest. Its website is the most comprehensive Judaism resource in the southern hemisphere. www.bje.org.au

 

Board of Progressive Jewish Education

The Board of Progressive Jewish Education oversees Jewish education for all ages from five to 18 who affiliate with Progressive Judaism. www.bpje.org.au

 

Jewish day-schools

There are five Jewish day schools in Sydney. Each caters to different groups and levels of religious identification.

They include:

  • Emanuel School
  • Kesser Torah College
  • Masada College
  • Moriah College
  • Mount Sinai College

In areas that hold a significant Jewish presence, students at public schools are offered Jewish education through the Board of Jewish Education. It offers Jewish scripture lessons at key public schools.

Most synagogues offer religious classes and the NSW Board of Progressive Jewish Education offers a supplementary education in schools for Progressive students.
