Challah, wine, blessings, togetherness, sharing and decompressing at the end of the week is what Shabbat is about for thousands of Jewish families in Sydney – and millions, globally – every week.
The Board of Deputies takes those elements to the wider community by hosting communal Shabbat dinners at synagogues throughout Sydney on a regular basis. Guests take part in a Shabbat prayer service, followed by a traditional dinner in the synagogue dining hall.
We have hosted members of state and federal parliament, young political groups, the Chinese and Indian communities, new immigrants, NGO representatives, union leaders, councillors and members of other faith and ethnic groups. Shabbat dinners are an opportunity for others to experience our traditions and break down barriers.
We have held outreach Shabbat dinners at: Central Synagogue, Emanuel Synagogue, Kehillat Masada Synagogue, Maroubra Synagogue, North Shore Temple Emanuel, Parramatta Synagogue, Southern Sydney Synagogue and The Great Synagogue.
