Members of the community who are unable to cast their votes in the NSW Council elections on Saturday, December 4 due to Shabbat can vote at pre-poll stations from Monday, November 22.

“There are multiple options for members of the Jewish community to vote before election day, or for those who are unable or unwilling to visit a polling booth on the day,” NSW Jewish Board of Deputies CEO Darren Bark said.

“These pre-polling options also allow for us to be COVID-smart, avoiding crowds, waiting in line or visiting a location you may not be comfortable with.

“We encourage all members of the community to keep COVID-safe while exercising their civil responsibilities, making sure your voice is heard on election day.”

Commenting on the elections more generally, he added, “We are excited to see such a high level of community participation across the state.

“There are numerous Jewish candidates running for political parties across the spectrum and we welcome involvement in politics at all levels.”

NSW Electoral Commissioner John Schmidt said that in response to COVID-19 all voters are able to vote early in person, postal voting eligibility has been expanded and for voters meeting strict eligibility criteria, iVote, the commission’s technology-assisted online and telephone voting platform will be available at local council elections for the first time.

“Voter safety is paramount, as is ensuring every eligible elector in NSW has a chance to have their voice heard,” he said.

“For the first time all voters are eligible to vote in person at any time during the two-week voting period when a polling place is open. Early voting venues are listed on our website.”

Pre-poll stations are open until Friday, December 3, while postal votes can be received up until 6pm on December 17.

All polling places will be run in line with COVID-safe election guidelines including physical distancing, mask wearing, single-use pens and queue management. Signage and staff will direct voters to check in and comply with NSW Health advice.
